About Longview

Ossamus Hitch Methvin Sr. founded the town around 1870, selling 100 acres to the railroad for one dollar, and the name is said to come from two railroad surveyors who looked out from his porch and exclaimed at the long view. Longview incorporated in 1871 and became the Gregg County seat after the county was created in 1873; a small eastern piece of the city lies in Harrison County.
